It’s big news whenever Apple announces new products and now Apple’s bestselling consumer notebook receives the long rumored major redesign that is no doubt, another stunner. Just when you thought Apple couldn’t make the previous generation MacBook any better, they come around and offer this aluminum and glass beauty that is even thinner, lighter, and more powerful than before. Now that Apple has brought its renewed MacBooks ($1299 starting) and MacBook Pros ($1999 starting) even closer together by offering the same design, engineering, and -for the first time on the MacBook – aluminum body to both notebook lines, the once straightforward consumer and pro-line product differentiation is slowly fading away. Is this the best MacBook to date? Is it safe to call the MacBook, the MacBook Pro “mini”? Read on.

Design

The new MacBook and MacBook Pro make some significant strides in the design department. First, the MacBook for the first time, joins the MacBook Pro in offering an all-aluminum body, ditching the white polycarbonate plastic that once defined the consumer line. In fact, both machines look pretty much identical to each other – offering a black glass bezel screen and black “chiclet-style” keyboards to reflect the new Apple design direction first introduced with the current iMac and iPhone. It’s a stunner for sure. The exterior borrows cues from the MacBook Air using tapered edges that trick you into thinking it’s even thinner than it already is. The magnetic latch opens and closes the display with buttery smoothness and without mechanical parts. Aa satisfyingly solid “thunk” can be heard when closed. Available in the more expensive $1599 model are LED backlit keys – a first for the MacBook.

Aside from the switch to a fully aluminum casing that replaces the now-defunct white plastic and/or black matte finish of the previous generation, Apple is touting its new manufacturing process as a technological and engineering breakthrough. Using a full slab of aluminum to construct the MacBook and MacBook Pro, not only does this revolutionary process create a body and chassis that is much stiffer with no flexing, these new notebooks use less mechanical screws, parts and pieces to construct together, and thus allow Apple is able to achieve a lighter and thinner product. The result is a notebook that is so clean and so sleek looking in design, it’s devoid of any evidence of screws to piece it together and without any vents, confirms that this new design doubles as an effective heatsink.

While it’s nice to see the MacBook now offer the same look and materials as the MacBook Pro, Apple may now run the risk of cannibalizing sales of its own pricier MacBook Pros, as they both look almost identical to each other and features-wise, the line between the two is blurring. Call it the MacBook Pro mini if you will in appearance, Apple has revolutionized a new way to build quality notebooks that are also environmental friendly.

Size and Weight

Impressively, the new MacBook is even thinner and lighter than before, achieving a thickness of only .95 ” – the same as the new MacBook Pro. At 4.5 pounds, the new MacBook is 1.5 pounds lighter than the outgoing model with weight evenly distributed across thanks to its unibody construction (read: less parts). At 12.78″ x 8.94″, the new machines are pretty much identical in dimensions to the last generation models.

Keyboard

Love it or hate it, Apple has now transitioned its entire Mac lineup to the retro-looking “chiclet-style” keyboard with the new MacBooks. Rather than color match the keys with the aluminum body, Apple’s new design direction employs the use of black keys to give the notebook an interesting design contrast. The downside of having black keys is noticeable fingerprint smudging from oily fingers; At least it won’t look and get dirty like the older white MacBooks. Aesthetics aside, the full-size keyboard is a real pleasure to type on with very solid and satisfying clicks. The keys may be flat and spaced out, but it’s oh-so-comfortable to type on with just the right amount of key travel and spring action. The higher end model also offers LED backlit keys for the first time on a MacBook – once again, blurring the lines between the MacBook and MacBook Pro in features.

Display

With a gorgeous 13.3″ LED-backlit LCD screen fully encased beneath a black bezeled glass, the MacBook’s display is stunning to look at even when powered off. The glossy finish makes colors really pop and adds to its enhanced vibrance, but at the cost of massive glare, making outdoor viewing difficult. Indoor viewing is not as bad, but reflections abound so be mindful of viewing angles and tilt adjustments. At first glance, the display seems identical to the previous MacBook screen with the same 1280×800 native resolution, but thanks to the new LED-backlighting, the display is evenly lit across the screen and noticeably brighter than the previous generation models. Watching movies was a real treat even though you’ll find yourself seeing your own reflection in lighted areas. But when compared to the MacBook Pro’s larger screen, the MacBook’s picture quality is still inferior and you’ll notice the contrast and blacks drop out when viewed from an angle – The MacBook Pro’s, on the otherhand, looks great at any angle. This is a big reason why Apple would like for you to pay the extra money to go Pro for the better screen. A built-in iSight camera is included as well like before on the top of the display.

Buttonless Glass Trackpad

Apple once again leads the competition by offering zero buttons…no really! Apple has created the first “buttonless” trackpad built entirely of glass that also includes multi-touch technology. The entire trackpad is essential a button in itself where pushing down creates a solid click to confirm depresses. While it takes getting used to at first, the trackpad actually turns out to be very intuitive with a smooth glossy feel. The MacBook Air introduced 3-finger scrolling and the MacBook and MacBook Pro now offer 4-finger multi-touch scrolling for calling upon Expose and Spaces functionality. While quirky, you’ll soon appreciate the wonders the new glassy trackpad’s buttonless design provides.

Connectivity

Apple has shrewdly and neatly moved all ports to the left side of the notebook (the right side now occupies the lone optical drive), giving it a very clean and organized look so there’s no cluttered wires coming out of either side. With the MacBook, you get 2 USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet port, audio in/out jacks, MagSafe charge port, and the new mini DisplayPort that replaces the old mini-DVI out in an effort to save precious component space. Also of convenience is the battery meter on the same side. In a surprising move, Apple has curiously decided to omit FireWire in the new MacBook that was previous made standard across the entire Mac lineup. Now, the only way for media heads to take advantage of FireWire connectivity is to shell up the $700 for the MacBook Pro or buy a pricey adapter. While most people can argue that FireWire’s adoption is dwindling in favor of USB, one of the unique things that made FireWire so special for Macs is the target disk feature, allowing the computer to boot OS X off any FireWire external drive. Call it cost-cutting or the death of FireWire adoption, we call it a disappointment.

The DisplayPort is another interesting move on Apple’s part to capitalize on a new standard that not only saves component space from the larger DVI and mini-DVI ports, but transitions across all future Macs. Unfortunately, Apple is skimping on the accessories as you’ll have to shell the hefty $99 for the mini DisplayPort adapter kit to connect an external monitor. Harsh.

For the common consumer, the MacBook provides just enough of what you need and nothing you don’t in terms of available ports. Trimming the fat, Apple still doesn’t offer any built-in digital card reader into the unit when compared to the competition and ExpressCard is a feature you’ll only find on the MacBook Pro. Limited but more than sufficient.

Upgrading

One of the pains of owning an Apple notebook before was the difficulty in upgrading the basic hardware components. It took a few dozen tiny screws just to get to the harddrive! Not so with these new notebooks. Apple clearly did it’s homework when redesigning the MacBook and MacBook Pro, making it very easy to open and upgrade. Only 2 aluminum plates pieces hold the base together, providing easy access into the harddrive compartment and RAM slots through a simple flip of a latche. The big news is the removable battery, now tucked neatly beneath one panel next to the hard drive. Upgrading is limited to your standard harddrive upgrade (SATA or SSD) and adding more RAM (up to 4GB max).

Features:

The MacBook is a real engineering marvel. It’s stunning good looks compliment the bevy of new advanced technology and engineering features. The Intel Core2Duo 2.0Ghz model ($1299) we received proved plenty capable of handling most common computing tasks and comes with a 160gb harddrive and 2gb of RAM (with the 1066Mhz FSB). A 2.4Ghz model is available as well for an additional $300 sticker price and includes a 250Gb SATA drive. Both models offer the option of the pricey but fast SSD drive.

Ditching the weak integrated graphics chipset from Intel, the MacBook finally offers a dedicated true graphics engine in the form of the nVidia GeForce 9400M making for better handling of 3D graphics and video. The results, are quite noticeable in speed and video performance throughout the system. Another great feature with this card is that it results in lower heat generation as the CPU no longer has to work so hard in processing these tasks. However, don’t expect the GPU to bowl you over in graphics-heavy applications though (read gaming). But, the 9400M certainly does pack a good amount of 3D punch to your videos, media, and gaming sessions, especially with the likes of the new Adobe Photoshop utilizing thus features.

Wireless-N, Bluetooth, SuperDrive and iSight are all standard features as usual.

Heat and noise wasn’t much of an issue with the new MacBooks thanks to the entire aluminum unibody acting as a giant heatsink. The notebook runs warm but not quite as hot as older models and a soft hum can be heard only when the fan kicks in intermittently. No issues here. In our battery tests, watching a DVD yielded about 2:40 of juice, and in basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing, a respectable 4:30 of life.

Conclusion

Overall, we found the new MacBook a real pleasure to use as with all Mac products we’ve tested. It’s a gorgeous, sexy piece of machinery and certainly the best MacBook yet. But we do question Apple’s decision to make the MacBook so closely identical in looks and features to the MacBook Pro… Anyway, at $1299 starting, it’s a tad more expensive than we had hoped it would be, but you do get a lot for your money namely the aluminum casing, glassy multi-touch buttonless trackpad and of course, the revolutionary unibody “brick” construction and for a whole $700 cheaper than the cheapest MacBook Pro model. Nonetheless it’s a excellent buy for one of the best notebooks around on the market. Some may not like Apple’s new design direction (myself included) utilizing black keys to contrast the aluminum, but there’s no denying this is one of the best looking laptops available.

Bottom Line:
With a dedicated GPU and aluminum body, it might be “safe” to call the MacBook the “true” successor to the highly heralded Powerbook 12″. Well…almost – the lack of FireWire is a serious hit and it’s still a tad too big. What about calling it a MacBook Pro mini? Not quite but its darn close. A better display and graphics card, Firewire, ExpressCard slot, and LED keys are all that gets in the way of the $700 difference, features wise. Yet, the lines between the consumer and pro models are fading away ever so slightly…Suddenly $1299 feels like a great bargain.

Build and Design

The HP ProBook 4520s has a clean and semi-rugged outside appearance; a step up from the previous generation model. The screen cover instead of being plastic on the 4510s is now brushed metal which feels stronger and looks much nicer. The new metal cover keeps a clean appearance, hides most fingerprints and resists mild scratching from day to day abuse. The inside gets the same treatment with the bronze, anodized, brushed-metal finish for its palmrest and speaker grill.

Besides those changes the notebook retains much of the same design as the previous model. The keyboard is a chiclet design with a glossy black plastic inlay, continuing to the screen bezel which shares the same look. The bottom of the notebook has the same clean design at the expense of removing access to all user-upgradable parts.

Build quality is very good and a step up from the older model. The brushed metal lid gives the 4520s some much needed strength and screen protection that the plastic lid on the previous model lacked. The palmrest and speaker grill also gained some rigidity and now offer very little flex under strong pressure. The chassis as a whole feels very well built but still a step below full business notebooks like the EliteBook or ThinkPad series. The keyboard tray has some minor flex under pressure which wouldn’t be a problem on the more expensive models.

Another area of questionable design is the lack of upgrade access which has its strengths and weaknesses. The solid bottom cover has very little flex, which you might find if the bottom was covered in individual panels. On the other hand, the lack of access makes it more difficult to replace defective components or upgrade items down the line.

Screen and Speakers

The ProBook 4520s comes equipped with a 15.6″ anti-glare display with a 16:9 widescreen ratio. At 1366 x 768 pixels, this 720p high-definition display is perfectly usable and features good color and contrast. We know many people are concerned about the transition from 16:10 to 16:9 ratio screens (because this means less vertical resolution) but the difference is so minor that the vast majority of notebook users will never have a problem.

Horizontal viewing angles are quite impressive and you only start to notice some color shift after you get 75 degrees off center. Vertical viewing angles are only average as the screen begins to wash out from above and colors begin to invert from below after about 45 degrees in either direction. The matte finish really helped out a lot with the steeper viewing angles, since glossy panels can sometimes pick up reflections that overpower the screen at certain viewing angles.

The speakers on the HP ProBook 4520s performed roughly on average with other small and medium business notebooks. Compared to most consumer notebook speakers they left a lot to be desired, but for light music listening or catching your favorite TV show streaming on the road they should be more than adequate. Peak volume levels were fine for a small or medium size room. Bass and midrange were lacking, but that was par for the course with most notebooks in this class.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The full-size keyboard on the 4520s shares the same design as the one found on the 4510s and provides fantastic spacing between keys for typing as well as a dedicated number pad (a major plus for businesses that use their computers for number crunching or data entry). Each key is relatively flat with a nice matte texture and the keys sit above a glossy black support frame. The support frame surrounding the keys is quite firm thanks to the design of the chassis which adds additional support for the keyboard. The only obvious area of flex in the keyboard is when you press on the number pad keys. Keep in mind, however, that we received a pre-production unit, and HP claims that the production units shipping to customers have even better support against flex.

The individual key presses are quiet without loud clicking sounds as you type. The depth of each key press is excellent, though some people may dislike the flat, chicklet-style keys. Overall the keyboard layout is extremely nice for a 15-inch laptop.

HP updated the touchpad on the 4520s from the older 4510s, with the notebook now including a button-free Synaptics ClickPad. The primary difference is a larger surface to use for making gestures and a cleaner appearance without additional buttons. With that said, we experienced some difficulties adjusting to the new format. If you are a notebook user who likes to rest their fingers on the touchpad buttons while you move your cursor around the screen you will be in for a world of surprise. Even in the defined touchpad button zones the touchpad picks up your stationary finger input and tries to incorporate it into a multitouch gesture. Pinch zoom is the gesture that most frequently activates, although even after all multitouch gestures were disabled we still noticed the cursor would “hop” around the desktop. This is very similar to the experience we had with the Dell Inspiron 11z which had an Elantech button-free touchpad. Making the touchpad button areas a “dead zone” would completely resolve this problem.

Overall the touchpad was very sensitive and easy to use (not including the aforementioned problems). Tracking speed was excellent and we had no problems with input lag. Multitouch gestures were quickly recognized and worked smoothly. The touchpad refresh rate was very high, allowing us to draw fast circles with very little trailing effect on the cursor. If the touchpad didn’t have the problems associated with the left and right buttons with fingers resting on the surface, it would have been one of the nicer models we have used on a notebook.

Ports and Features

Port selection on the HP ProBook 4520s is good for a small-business notebook but it seems there is room leftover that could have been used for additional ports. The notebook has three USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA/USB combo port, VGA and HDMI-out, LAN, dialup modem, and audio jacks. The system also features an ExpressCard/34 slot and SDHC-card reader for expansion.

RED has continued to evolve with its recent releases of the Epic X S-35 and the Scarlet, skewed towards the ‘Prosumer’ market.

Robinson is a seasoned user of the RED, shooting films for Bigfoot Entertainment, who were one of the pioneers to integrate the camera system into their filmmaking process.  Like Steven Soderbergh did when shooting Che, Robinson has taken the RED through its paces.   In almost every possible condition be it on land, air, sea and underwater on a variety of Bigfoot projects shot in the US, China, Vietnam and Philippines, RED has succeeded.

“Every cameraman has a different approach to the RED.  There are those who have worked primarily on video, making the digital transformation easier, while there are those who have worked on film and found the transition more challenging.” says Robinson.

Cioni recognizes as well the importance of the training aspects of high res storytelling, with each next model an improvement from its predecessors.   “One with a ‘screwdriver mentality’ will have a hard time adjusting.  The subject of continuing education can sometimes get confused with issues of ageism, but the fact is that those people, whichever age, who are computer tech savvy will be the ones managing the systems down the line. ”

” What is now referred to as the new technology will be the next normal.  With anything new, there is a learning curve and one must be willing or able to accept the new challenge,” says Robinson.

In the web filmmaker community, a recent debate has been whether the next generation of Ultra-High Resolution is advancing too fast for the creatives and the Internet to keep up.   Cioni states clearly what he observes from his popular post facilities at LightIRON that, ” Shooting 4K for online is not overkill!” He sees Wavelet flavors becoming the standard to view files and web series’ within the next one to three years and believes that those web filmmakers keeping tabs on the latest editions will be in a good position for success.  Web storytellers are best served learning the pros and cons of the sharp Scarlet or the new FLUT color science and MYSTERIUM-X 5K sensor that wraps the eye on the EPIC X.  “…we’re talking about no visible artifacting… and no noticeable pixilation which offers better, smoother values at a faster tradeoff.  I’m looking forward to seeing 2K, 3K and 4K online.” says Cioni.

Rick Robinson says, “The language of film storytelling today is in binary code.  No matter how you spin it, understanding the production and post production workflow is crucial to the success of the project.”  He has found his best success with RED in something he likes to call The Sweet Spot.  “The RED cam shines ‘the bright’ with low light means.  Shooting wide open, long lens texture is the sweet spot and you can get amazing imagery.  In exterior settings, the same rules apply, however it is essential to gain total control over the bright light.  Generally, shooting in high contrast lighting environments with shadows  cast by the sun poses greater challenge because the video does not have the dynamic range.”

Michael Cioni believes that although luminaries will continue to improve as technology advances, skills and the artistic creativity will remain an important experiential trait.   “Cameras are similar to a cat’s eye in the dark, it’s largely a question of emphasis on ambient than sculpture lighting.   With the Epic X you will not require as much ambient light, enabling you to focus on sculpting instead .”

Rick Robinson is on post production with two upcoming Bigfoot films, Deep Gold and Love Stinks while currently mentoring The Filmmaking Series at IAFT in Cebu, Philippines.  ” Shooting in Cebu is a great opportunity because it is a great tropical setting with visual colors and texture that will simply amaze you.  One of the biggest advantages as a student at IAFT is that the campus is shared with Bigfoot Studios, which is a fully equipped state-of-the-art production facility. ”

The newspaper man

Will it impact on conventional newspapers? My instinct says it is just the first step in a news delivery revolution. The speed of the revolution will depend on the content suppliers willingness to invest (and change the nature of their content), the manufacturer’s willingness to make it economic to own it and for advertisers to be convinced that it is a platform that gets their message over. No simple answer. So in the meantime readers will continue to fold up the print product and carry it in their bags or pockets. The music man

This will be a revolutionary device, not for any single reason but just for the shift in paradigm to a true “pad” experience that this will provide. My view is that it will have three life cycles 1) I want one 2) What is it really 3) Couldn’t live without it.

Tablets have failed to date because they were extensions to a PC, the iPhone showed what a true touch environment could be and that is the basis for outstanding change. Sales will be initially massive because of the “I want one” impact. The music journalist

As expected, none of the innovations that came with the iPad at launch will have any major affect on music. I suppose the iTunes LP makes slightly more sense now. Personally, I was hoping for something that would replace my home computer, but it’s not going to do that. Partly because it doesn’t have nearly enough disk space.

However, given that playing music and watching film are supposed to be a big part of what the iPad will be used for (particularly the latter), the disk size may be a hint that Apple sees this as something that streams data in from elsewhere, either from other devices or the internet, rather than a storage device. Although their rumoured online music ‘locker’ service wasn’t announced yesterday, this could still be a big part Apple’s music offering in the future.

With all the hype, the iPad was always going to be a bit of a let down, but to write it off as simply “a big iPhone” would be foolish at this early stage. The magazine maker

Speaking on my own behalf – rather than for any of the magazines I contribute to – I’d say it’s going to be fascinating to see the effect the iPad has on the publishing market. I’m sure publishers will look to follow the lead of The New York Times – who have a head start – in tailoring their publication for this product. The thing it appears to provide is an electronic format where the beauty, visual wit and elegance of the best magazines can be replicated – as opposed to the more functional approach of traditional websites.

Hopefully a hybrid media will emerge – with the strongest aspects of traditional publishing combined with web capabilities (video, audio clips etc). How much of a boost this provides for ‘print’ media will depend on how quickly publishers adapt and, obviously, what the public take-up is for the iPad. It’s not cheap and it’s not essential; it could be that people will just think it’s a very cool laptop… Mind you, look what being a ‘cool’ MP3 player did for the iPod. The man in film PR

Well it seems to me that the response has been highly mixed. Some champion a new piece of hardware that sits in between a phone and a laptop. Others believe it to be an anti-climax headlined by its lack of key features (camera, flash support, wireless syncing etc).

I see both sides and my opinion hasn’t really changed. As a unique piece of hardware it will take time to reach any level of critical mass. I always feel you need to bet on the right people. There were plenty of people betting against Avatar but they were wrong to bet against James Cameron. Likewise Apple’s track record is second to none (well maybe Pixar who they own) and I wouldn’t bet against this platform.

Which brings me to film. As I said previously, right now this is just another platform to view film, TV and listen to music. In the same way the iPhone hasn’t affected the industry the iPad won’t either. It just provides another forum to watch quality product. As you can see from the attached video after the jump, this 4 x 6 foot table has a camera mounted above it, much like the futuristic hexagonal-type board game that we reported on yesterday.

The user has the power to place a physical object on the Pictionaire, and, with a little drag-and-drop gesture, he or she will have a digital copy of that item. The original physical object can be moved, and the digital copy can be traced onto a whiteboard or a sketchpad.

The user also has the option of putting a wireless keyboard on the table, and the table can become a display. From what it looks like in the video, the user can type in a keyword and get the image that he or she is looking for, maybe from the objects that were on the Pictionaire before.

It reminds of a desk I saw in The Island. Some of you might not remember this film, because it was an intelligent Michael Bay film that didn’t involve giant robots beating each other up. I believe that the villain in The Island had a desk with projections, and he even had Ewan McGregor draw on it with a virtual stylus. You know that desks like this will be in offices of the future, unless the companies can afford a Surface.

Apple hopes to sell consumers on the value of tablet — which will have a price tag starting at $499 — computing after other technology companies, including Microsoft Corp and Toshiba Corp, have failed to do so in recent years.

Called the “iPad,” the tablet is Apple’s biggest product launch since the iPhone three years ago, and arguably rivals the smartphone as the most anticipated in Apple’s history.

Culminating months of feverish speculation on the Internet and among investors, Jobs took the stage at a jam-packed theater in San Francisco and, with his famed showman’s flair, began displaying the device’s features.

Jobs said there was a need for a new type of device that would sit between a smartphone and laptop computer, and that can perform tasks like browse the Web, play games and display electronic books.

“If there’s going to be a third category of device, it going to have to be better at these kinds of tasks,” he said.

The iPad has a near life-sized touch keyboard and supports Web browsing. It comes with a built-in calendar and address book, Jobs said, calling it “awesome.”

Despite the buzz surrounding the launch and Apple’s storied golden touch on consumer electronics, the tablet is not necessarily an easy sell, analysts say.

Consumer appetite for such a device category has yet to be proven, though plenty of devices such as Amazon.com’s Kindle e-reader are vying for that market.

Shares of Apple have generally risen ahead of Wednesday’s event. The stock slid rose 0.5 percent to $206.92 at mid-afternoon, within reach of its all-time high of $215.59 logged on January 5.

As iPod sales wane, Apple is looking for another growth engine and hopes to find one in the tablet. But the move is not without risk. Consumers have never warmed to tablet computers, despite many previous attempts by other companies.

In an online poll on reuters.com, 37 percent of more than 1,000 respondents said they would pay $500-$699 for the tablet. Nearly 30 percent weren’t interested, while 20 percent said they would pay $700-$899.

Analysts’ sales predictions for the tablet vary widely, with many believing Apple can sell 2 million to 5 million units in the first year.
